Why PAL Games Run Slower: 50Hz vs 60Hz Explained

If a childhood favourite feels strangely heavy when you return to the European version, nostalgia is not playing tricks on you. During the cartridge and early disc eras, many PAL releases really did run more slowly than their Japanese and North American counterparts.

The short answer

Most European televisions were built around the PAL broadcast system, which refreshed at 50 fields per second. Japan and North America generally used 60Hz television standards. Games were often designed around the timing of the 60Hz original, then adapted for a 50Hz market. When a developer simply made the console wait for the slower display timing, the whole game could run at roughly five-sixths of its intended speed.

That is the famous “about 17% slower” figure. It is a useful rule of thumb for an unoptimised conversion, not a promise that every PAL game behaves identically.

Why television frequency affected the game

On many 8-bit and 16-bit machines, the video refresh was also the game’s clock. Movement, animation, timers and music could all advance once per displayed frame. A title designed to update 60 times each second but run only 50 updates each second did not merely look less fluid: characters moved more slowly, countdowns lasted longer and music dropped in pitch and tempo.

PAL offered a higher vertical resolution than NTSC, but many conversions did not redraw their artwork for the extra lines. The result was the familiar letterboxed picture with black borders at the top and bottom, sometimes paired with a slightly squashed image.

Not every PAL release was a bad conversion

Good developers compensated. They could adjust movement values and timers, rearrange the display for PAL’s resolution, and retune or speed up audio. Some games were partly optimised, fixing gameplay speed while leaving music or borders alone. Others were fully optimised and feel correct on original European hardware.

This is why “buy the NTSC version” is too simple. A PAL-exclusive title may be excellent, a PAL release may contain useful language options, and a carefully optimised conversion can be virtually indistinguishable in play. Conversely, forcing an optimised PAL game into 60Hz can make it run too fast or expose display problems.

How to tell what you are playing

Check the region

European cases and cartridges usually carry PAL markings or regional product codes. Imports may require an adaptor or a region-modified console.

Compare the soundtrack

Music is often the quickest giveaway. An unoptimised 50Hz version can sound lower and noticeably more relaxed than a 60Hz recording.

Look for borders

Large horizontal borders are a clue, although borders alone do not prove the gameplay is slow.

What modern players can do

Later PAL consoles increasingly supported a 60Hz mode, and modern displays are far less tied to one regional broadcast frequency. An RGB-capable original console with a compatible television or scaler may run imported 60Hz games beautifully. FPGA systems can reproduce regional timings closely, while software emulators make it easy to select the version you actually want.

For collectors, the best approach is title by title: research whether the PAL release was optimised, decide whether original packaging matters to you, and never assume the most expensive import is automatically the best experience.
